The Agricultural office of The Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture of Zahlé (CCIAZ) was established in March 1997 in Zahlé - Békaa. The Békaa valley is the largest region in Lebanon, covering 40% (about 4000 Km2) of the country and known as the first agricultural region in Lebanon. It is located in the eastern part of the country, bordered on the west by the steep front of the Lebanon Mountains and on the east by the Anti-Lebanon Mountains.
The rainfall is restricted to 5 months (November-March), and varies from 250 mm in Northern Békaa to 750 - 850 mm in the Central and Southern Békaa. the irrigation is mainly made from wells.
The main objectives of the Agricultural Office are:
- Advising farmers on new agricultural techniques: irrigation, water savings, pruning…
- Introducing new varieties of crops (apple, almonds, Walnut, grapes…), adapted to the market demand.
- Introducing the vineyards culture as a replacement for forbidden crops.
- Assisting the cooperatives about management and organization.
- Introducing a new service on Accounting & Management in agriculture.
